Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Data Records from Suomi NPP - This data family contains the raw, sensor and environmental data records from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite. VIIRS is a scanning radiometer that collects visible and infrared imagery and radiometric measurements of the land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans. VIIRS data is used to measure cloud and aerosol properties, ocean color, sea and land surface temperature, ice motion and temperature, fires, and Earth's albedo. VIIRS extends and improves upon a series of measurements initiated by the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
VIIRS Active Fires ARP (AVAFO) from the Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) is no longer archived as of 2017-06-28. Users should use the higher quality, replacement product, JPSS Active Fires (AF), which began on 2016-03-15 and is available from NOAA NCEI at https://doi.org/10.7289/V5GH9G0T.
VIIRS Sea Surface Temperature EDR (VSSTO) from the Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) is no longer archived as of 2017-05-22. Users should use the higher quality, replacement product, NOAA ACSPO VIIRS SST which began on 2014-05-19 and available from NOAA NCEI at https://doi.org/10.7289/V5PR7SX5.
Beginning on August 11-14, 2014, CLASS started receiving the majority of JPSS data in gzip compressed format. The file names remained the same. Other than the file size being smaller, users do not need to make any changes to their software to use the data.
